NAJIB Razak’s oath at a mosque to deny that he ordered the murder of Mongolian interpreter Altantuya Shaariibuu appears to have convinced some people who gathered to watch him perform the “sumpah laknat” today.
Thousands had stayed back after Friday prayers at Masjid Jamek in Kg Baru to watch the former prime minister swear that he did not do what was claimed in a statutory declaration by former commando Azilah Hadri, who was convicted of Altantuya’s murder in 2006.
Hasnah Abd Rahman said one has to take the “sumpah laknat” seriously. It means a “curse swear” or oath made to God calling for divine retribution if the oath taker or his accuser is lying.
Amy Amieda, who came from Rawang to witness Najib’s oath, said what the Pekan MP did today was right.
“One should fear Allah when they make such vow because it is not a small thing. He was brave to do it,” she said.
Amy said Friday, a holy day for Muslims, was also the right day to do it, and the mosque, a holy place, also showed his sincerity.
Azilah in a statutory declaration dated October 17 this year said Najib had personally instructed him on the same date in 2006 to carry out Altantuya’s murder. Najib was deputy prime minister then and Azilah a member of his security detail.
Najib denied Azilah’s claims and called the statutory declaration part of the Pakatan Harapan government’s efforts to silence him.
This is the third time Najib has taken the oath in a mosque regarding Altantuya. The first time was in 2007 during the Ijok by-election and the second time was at the Permatang Pauh by-election in 2008.
An observer at the mosque today, who only wanted to be known as Hadi, said the statutory declaration had emerged at a time when the PH government needed to distract the public from other issues.
“This is a method used by PH to divert attention. They are trying to cover up other issues, so they brought this up. Now, Azilah is the scapegoat.
“PH should focus more on how to better manage the country than finding ways how to put Najib into more problems,” the 75-year-old said.
Najib today was accompanied by his wife Rosmah Mansor and daughter Nooryana Najwa Najib.
Also present were Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, as well as other leaders from Umno and PAS. – December 20, 2019.
