RM120 million to repair 120 ‘critically damaged’ courthouses

THE Economic Affairs Ministry has set aside RM120 million for the repair and upgrading of 120 court buildings across the country, its minister Mohamed Azmin Ali disclosed today.

In a statement, Azmin said the work would be completed over the next two years under the fourth 2020 rolling plan.

He said the allocation to the project was from the ministry’s development funds.

“The Economic Affairs Ministry has taken serious note of the application to upgrade and repair the old court buildings with critical damage,” Azmin said.

He said the state of the courthouses not only affected court operations but also jeopardised the safety of the judiciary members, staff and the visiting public.

Work will be done to repair the roofings, walls, water pipes, air-conditioning and fire prevention systems.

Azmin said Sabah had the most courthouses to be fixed at 19, followed by Perak (18) and Johor (13).

Selangor has 12, Kedah and Kelantan (10 each), Pahang (9), Negri Sembilan (8), Terengganu (6), Penang and Sarawak, 5 each, Malacca (3) and Putrajaya and Labuan (one each). – December 11, 2019.
