COME to the Batu office and find out how constituency funds have been spent, MP P. Prabakaran has challenged his detractors.
Other than that, they can wait for the accounts to be published next February, the first-time MP told The Malaysian Insight.
He said he has spent the lion’s share of the RM1.5 million allocated to his constituency but grassroots party members are questioning how he had dished out the funds.
“In just a few months, he has spent almost all the money and from what we know, there is just some RM20,000 left. For three months, he was working with us (PKR) but then he went solo,” a party member said.
“We were told that he gave money to mosques and schools but is that true? Is there proof?” said the PKR member on condition of anonymity.
Prabakaran brushed off the accusation, saying that the money had been put to good use in the constituency.
“I will release the accounts by next February because I have to show the public.
“Now I cannot say much because we’re still in the process of finalising the funds,” he said.
Last week, a source from Prabakaran’s office told The Malaysian Insight that the funds were provided to the MP by the federal government in February with the condition they must be used by September.
As the year-end approaches, Prabakaran said there should not be the funds available as alleged, because spending should be over so that the accounts can be closed.
Reports of him spending too quickly worked in his favour, he said, because it showed that he was active helping his constituents.
Prabakaran added it was baseless to accuse him of working with PKR for only three months and then going solo.
“To date, I am still working with PKR and I don’t know why they said that.” – November 26, 2019.
