BN MPs meet at Azmin’s home

BARISAN Nasional MPs were at Mohamed Azmin Ali’s home last night for what is believed to be a meeting to stop attempts to force Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad out of office.

Among the MPs was Hishammuddin Hussein. It has been speculated for months that the former Umno vice-president is linked to efforts to get his party men to join Pakatan Harapan.

The meeting at the economic affairs minister’s Putrajaya residence started about 9.30pm and lasted two hours.

Those who left the house kept mum on what was discussed.

Sources told The Malaysian Insight that 22 MPs from Umno and five from PKR were in attendance.

Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin and Deputy Transport Minister Kamaruddin Jaffar were seen at their party deputy president’s home.

Ampang MP Zuraida is a known staunch supporter of Azmin. Kamaruddin is the lawmaker for Bandar Tun Razak.

Zuraida waved at reporters outside the house, while Cameron Highlands MP Ramli Mohd Nor, of BN, would only say the meeting “was nothing”.

Since BN’s thumping victory in Saturday’s Tanjung Piai by-election, pressure is increasing on Dr Mahathir to quit his post, with political observers blaming the 94-year-old PH chairman for the pact’s humiliating defeat.

Immediately after MCA man Wee Jeck Seng was declared the winner with a 15,086-vote majority, veteran PKR politician Syed Husin Ali tweeted that Dr Mahathir “knows what should be done”.

The long-time critic of the prime minister also reiterated that there should be no more delays in handing over the top job to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

“The result is clear. The people are disappointed and want to teach PH, especially Dr Mahathir (a lesson). He knows what should be done and there should be no more delays.”

Wee polled 25,466 votes, while his closest competition, PH’s Karmaine Sardini, picked up 10,380.

Gerakan’s Wendy Subramaniam won 1,707 votes, Berjasa’s Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz (850), and independents Ang Chuan Lock (380) and Faridah Aryani Abd Ghaffar (32).

The by-election was called following the death of Dr Md Farid Md Rafik, 42, on September 21 due to heart complications. He had won the Johor federal seat for PH in last year’s general election. – November 19, 2019.
