SELANGOR Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali has hit out at Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for his about-turn on Malaysia’s request from Interpol to locate financier Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low.
In Parliament yesterday, Zahid said Malaysian police have enlisted Interpol’s help in tracking down Low, who has been identified as the central figure in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
He was responding to a question from Azmin, who is also Gombak MP.
However, Zahid later said his remarks have been “manipulated” and clarified that the request for Interpol’s help was no longer active as the case files involving Low were closed.
Taking to Twitter, Azmin said Zahid’s “attempt at twisting the facts is futile”.
In a subsequent tweet, Azmin also asked if Zahid’s “boss” had “scolded” him.
American investigators claim that Low is the mastermind behind a scheme to siphon off money from state investor 1MDB.
His whereabouts are currently unknown.
Azmin had previously applied at the Kuala Lumpur High Court to compel police and the inspector-general of police to arrest Low.
However, this was dismissed by the court earlier this month after it allowed a preliminary objection by the Attorney-General’s Chambers in representing the police. – October 24, 2017.
