FORMER Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd staff have sought the help of Lembaga Zakat Selangor for tithe payments to tide over troubled times, reports Selangor Kini.

A total of 233 staff members – part of the 800 left jobless after the company closed down last month – have applied for the payment from the board.

Chief operating officer Saipolyazan M. Yusop was quoted as saying that their applications will be vetted before any payment is made.

“We will also be paying a visit to their homes before they can be registered as eligible recipients.

“The zakat assistance we can give depends on the needs of the family, until their situation stabilises,” he was quoted as saying in the Selangor publication.

Utusan, publishers of the country’s oldest newspaper Utusan Malaysia, ceased operations effective October 9 following crippling financial difficulties.

Its former staff are still not paid salaries owed and were last week told that they would have to wait at least six months before the company’s assets could be sold off first. – November 14, 2019.

  • From UMNO media troopers to welfare cases. These retrenched staff are suffering the consequences of being willing instruments of UMNO slander and misinformation. Reaping what they have sown. A pity that their political masters are unaffected by the paper's closure while continuing with their lavish lifestyles financed by their ill begotten gains.
