THE Fire and Rescue Department has found another body, the eighth, in the Tanjung Bungah landslide.
However, Edwin Galan Teruki, the department’s operations head, said they encountered retrieval problems similar to that of the seventh victim. Both were flattened by steel beams.
“We have recovered the seventh victim, who is from Bangladesh. We are in the middle of pulling out the eighth victim, but we are facing difficulties as he has been flattened by steel beams, so we must (be careful to) preserve the body,” he said.
He said recovery efforts were difficult because of steel beams that flattened the remains. However, they hope they would be able to find other victims near the steel beams.
“We found the eighth victim at 3.27pm. The seventh victim was found at 9.50am but we only managed to pull the remains out three hours later.
“The steel beams did not pierce the body, so we need to cut the steel beams around it instead.
“The last three victims were found near the beams, so we hope that the others are near here, too.”
Including the unidentified eighth victim, one Malaysian, one Pakistani and two Bangladeshi victims remain trapped under the landslide. – October 22. 2017.
