OWNERS of business premises and billboards in Pahang who are yet to use Jawi on their signboards are advised to do so by year-end.

State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Abdul Rahim Muda said starting January 1, failure to use the Jawi script could cause them to be fined up to RM250 for one offence by their respective local authorities.

He said the move to use Jawi script of the same size as the Roman alphabet was decided this year to uphold Jawi that has become increasingly sidelined, but he said, based on observations, Jawi was still not widely used except in some locations in Kuantan and Pekan.

“There are even traders who claimed that they have not received the instructions although these have been circulated through the media, although not aggressively.

“We hope they use the remaining time to do so,” he told reporters after attending the ‘Love Our Beach’ programme at Balok Water Recreation Centre in Kuantan today.

Also present was Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) president Hamdan Hussin.

During the programme, 370 volunteers from private companies, financial institutions and students of tertiary institutions covered a 3km stretch along the beach and collected 451.5kg of rubbish in two hours.

Meanwhile, Hamdan said MPK had allocated RM1.9 million to develop the infrastructure and public utilities including roads and toilet in beach areas in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2020.

Of this, Pantai Cherating, Pantai Chendor and Pantai Sepat will receive RM500,000 each while Pantai Batu Hitam and Pantai Kempadang will receive RM200,000 each.

“We realise that the beaches in this district have to compete with other nearby tourist attractions, including beaches in Terengganu.

“But once the facilities have been developed, we hope more tourists would choose beaches in Kuantan as their holiday,” he said. – Bernama, November 2, 2019.

  • How many Malaysians can read Jawi? Why enforce a language that many can't understand? U have to be very inconsiderate to behave as an EXCO! Another reason for me to skip another year from going Pahang.
