Only Pakatan presidential council can decide on PM, says Dr Mahathir

DR Mahathir Mohamad today reiterated that only the Pakatan Harapan presidential council will determine his position as prime minister.

Dr Mahathir said the suggestion by opposition members of parliament that he remains prime minister until the next general election was only their opinion.

“That is their opinion. The one that will determine (me as prime minister) is the PH presidential council. We (PH’s presidential council) will decide.

“If it were them, (the opposition) that made me prime minister before the general election (14th), they would have the right to ask me to stay longer,” Dr Mahathir told a press conference with Malaysian journalists last night, before ending his two-day official visit to Turkmenistan today.

Last Thursday, six Umno MPs, in a press conference at the Parliament lobby, voiced their support for Dr Mahathir to continue as prime minister until the next elections.

The six were Mohd Shahar Abdullah (Paya Besar), Dr Adham Baba (Tenggara), Mastura Mohd Yazid (Kuala Kangsar), Abdul Rahman Mohamad (Lipis), Ismail Abdul Muttalib (Maran) and Ahmad Nazlan Idris (Jerantut).

Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir said he could not set a specific time frame for the transition of the country’s leadership.

“I promise I won’t stay too long, but I think based on my past experience I can try to correct all the wrongdoings of (former prime minister) Datuk Seri Najib (Razak).

“When I am satisfied, I will not continue (as prime minister) but I cannot give the specific time as the country is in a really big trouble that we cannot easily solve. We have a lot of debt and Datuk Najib has damaged the government machinery.

“That and other problems left by Najib, need to be fixed.”

Under the PH agreement before GE14, it was stipulated that Dr Mahathir will be appointed prime minister and that he will later hand over leadership to Anwar Ibrahim. However, no time frame was specified. – Bernama, October 28, 2019.

  • I just don't like the way u allow race and religion bigots to wave their tails that can destabilize the country. If u love the country, pls stay above race and religion for the sake of the country. Don't expect Non Malay absolute loyalty if the policies are soooo biased. We want to help the poor Malays as much as the Malay leaders but there must be a time frame and Malays must realize that govt offers opportunities but not endless. If they don't capitalize on the opportunity, someone else will get the opportunity. This way will ensure Malays grab the only chance in his life to succeed in whatever chances provided. Every Malay must be given a chance to succeed, NOT every opportunity given to a few Malays.

  • U can always remain as a Mentor Senior Minister like Singapore. If u r as good as LKY, people listen to u, but cabinet has ultimate right to decide. Don't assume u r the only one can do the job, this is bullshit. Honestly u have the character that is respected and distinct to lead but many others can handle the nation building tasks.
