ECONOMIC issues should be the topmost agenda at Pakatan Harapan presidential council meetings, said Anwar Ibrahim.

The PKR president’s statement today follows proposals for the council, which is the ruling pact’s highest decision-making body, to discuss the prime minister succession plan.

“The presidential council can discuss it, but we need to focus on the economy and let our prime minister lead the administration effectively,” he told reporters in Gombak.

“We need to move forward by focusing on the economy. When there are attempts to threaten the power transition process, the opposition should not interfere. The focus should be on economic problems.

“For the time being, let (Prime Minister) Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) continue with his work.”

Under the succession plan, Dr Mahathir will hand over the reins to Anwar midway through PH’s first term in office.

Dr Mahathir had said he was open to the matter being discussed by the PH presidential council.

Anwar said PH parties have already reached a consensus on the plan, and that the prime minister never disputed it.

“What Dr Mahathir means is the time frame (for the power transition). He has never disputed who will take over from him.” – October 27, 2019.

  • Getting a proper transitional of the post of PM should be done as soon as possible and not to be harped on without a definite date. It is not for Anwar to say but it is for the whole country and business community as a whole also.
