DEPUTY Home Minister Mohd Azis Jamman does not think the Home Ministry will be able to complete its review on the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) and table it in the current sitting of Parliament.
According to Azis, the ministry is prioritising the review but pointed out that the act is complex and it needs to be studied thoroughly before any amendment is proposed.
“The home ministry is looking at what is draconian in the act. We are trying our level best to speed-up the process.
“The sooner, the better but in reality, we know the complexity of this act.
“We don’t want to make a mess just to please certain parties, or we have to go back over it again.
“We don’t want this to happen. So, we have to be careful and meticulous, hence when the amendment to the act is made, it will be there to stay permanently,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby.
The Sepanggar MP said Pakatan Harapan did not mention anything about repealing the act in its manifesto.
However, Azis said it was mentioned that “any draconian law will be reviewed”.
While there are calls for Sosma to be abolished, Azis said until there is a decision Sosma will stay. – October 15, 2019.
