BARISAN Nasional (BN) will never sell strategic assets to keep national debts at a manageable level, as Pakatan Harapan is doing, said Najib Razak.
“If BN were still ruling, I guarantee that we will not choose to sell strategic assets.
“The sale of these assets is a short-term step that will be detrimental to the country and will surely harm the future generations,” the Pekan MP told reporters in the Parliament lobby today.
The former prime minister said that during BN’s administration, they actually increased national assets significantly, only for PH to sell most of them.
“Under PH, in just a year, too many strategic assets with high return value were sold,” he said.
Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali had previously said that sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional Bhd disposed of 84 assets when Najib was its board chairman between 2009 and 2018.
However, Najib said that Azmin didn’t mention the value of the assets that he sold off, the value of which sold in a year was five times more than that of his.
“The economic affairs minister said that 84 assets were sold in nine years and four months, but he didn’t value them.
“If we use Kadir Jasin’s figures, he said that the number is RM45.3 billion (over nine years) or RM5 billion a year.
“PH sold 12 assets in a year worth RM25.6 billion. Over a one-year period, that is five times more than BN,” Najib told reporters.
Najib also denied Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng’s allegation that they had to sell the assets because of BN government’s mismanagement. – October 10, 2019.
