PREACHER Zamihan Mat Zin today apologised to the Selangor sultan for his remarks on Muslim-only laundrettes, a day after he was stripped of his accreditation to preach Islam in the state.

The Kajang Prisons Department religious officer, who is on secondment from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), said he accepted and respected the decision by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, saying it was the ruler’s prerogative.

“I would like to apologise to Tuanku if I have offended you with my words when delivering a religious lecture at Tengku Ampuan Jamaah Mosque.

As a citizen, I have no intention of insulting the royal institution, and am only carrying out my responsibility to spread Islamic teachings,” he said in a statement.

Zamihan had criticised Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar for banning Muslim-only laundrettes in his state, and allegedly said the Chinese community was “unhygienic”.

Selangor Royal Court secretary Hanafisah Jais yesterday said Zamihan’s credentials had been stripped following his religious lecture, which contained statements that were racist, vulgar and overly critical of the royal institution.

According to the statement, the decision was reached after Sultan Sharafuddin’s meeting with the Selangor Islamic Religious Council.

Johor was the first to take action over Zamihan’s remarks, including severing ties with Jakim.

Zamihan urged all quarters to stop pitting Muslims against each other, calling for efforts to be focused on resisting threats from sects like the Wahhabi, Shia and liberals, as well as other deviant teachings.

“These people like to see Muslims at each other’s throats and disunited,” said the Sunni Organisation Malaysia president, adding that he would continue to serve in different ways.

He was arrested on Wednesday after a video clip of his lecture in Shah Alam surfaced on social media.

In the video, Zamihan said it was not Sultan Ibrahim’s right to declare that Muslim-only laundrettes were not allowed in Johor.

Zamihan was released on Saturday. – October 17, 2017.
