THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will be stationing a senior officer at the Sabah Chief Minister’s office to eliminate corruption involving the state’s leadership, said chief commissioner Latheefa Koya today.

According to Latheefa, this was an additional move, aside from setting up an integrity unit in the state administration to combat public sector corruption.

“We have offered to place a senior officer within the chief minister’s office as a measure of prevention, to ensure there will be no opportunity for corruption and he responded that we are welcome,” Latheefa said after paying a courtesy call to Sabah Chief Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal, today.

“We are now ironing out details on the placement and will make the necessary announcement soon.”

Latheefa said the purpose of the integrity unit at the state administration is to prevent leakages and corruption in the civil service.

At the meeting with Shafie, Latheefa also reiterated her call for all assemblymen to declare their wealth, similar to MPs, saying the move will be more effective in combating corruption among elected representatives.

Latheefa also said the likeliness that Sabah GLCs will be involved in corruption is higher than other states due to the wealth of natural resources.

However, she said the MACC has no remit to monitor the state GLCs, adding it is best for the firms to emulate the national GLCs by stationing integrity officers at their offices. – September 11, 2019.

  • Oh... this is strange! Lateefa says highly likelihood for SABAH GLCs to be involved in corruption compared to GLCs in other states due to rich resources.. and Yet... the chief says there is no remit for MACC to monitor the states GLC and it best they emulate practice what National GLCs are doing that is station integrity officers in their offices. This sounds rather odd... because she says there is a high likelihood there could be corruption in GLCs in Sabah BUT MACC DOESNT HAVE TJE REMIT TO MONITOR OR TAKE Action. I think SABAH could be one of the highly corrupted states and its surprising for the MACC Chief to make such a remark.. Just pick one GLC and investigate... eg. Sabah development bank.. or any GLC for that matter.. Im sure it will be a can of worms!!
