UMNO will not demand an apology from PAS for calling the party “infidel” (kafir) in the past, Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said.

According to Asyraf, both parties, which were once rivals for the Malay-Muslim vote, have decided to forget their previous enmity so they can move forward with the signing of their joint charter for their political co-operation this Saturday.

“Umno will not pressure PAS to apologise because it is no longer an issue. We have agreed to forget the past and to move forward.

“Our co-operation going forward is not about two Malay-Muslim parties working together and rebuilding the country,” Asyraf told the media after chairing Umno Youth’s monthly meeting in Kuala Lumpur today.

He said Umno and PAS wanted to return to an “original Malaysia’ based on “understanding that is enshrined in the Federal Constitution”, in response to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s remarks earlier today that PAS should retract its infidel label for Umno, given that they were going to formalise their alliance this weekend.

PAS first used the term during Dr Mahathir’s first tenure as prime minister, then as president of Umno, the lead party of Barisan Nasional. – September 10, 2019.

  • We need politicians with right and good values in mind to propel the country into great height of economic achievement and people progress. Not those crown actors who can hardly help the rakyat except themselves in their big position with big fat pay. All Muslims have every right to practise Islam without any resistance and all non muslims can practise their religion or beliefs freely in Malaysia. Religion is never an issue until the politicians stir and burn it to chaotic. Politic is aimed at helping the people to march forward economically, education and social progress. The word is PROGRESS for all, if politic is doing anything that jeopardise the PROGRESS, reject the leaders and the party.

  • Young man, the only thing Islamic about the present UMNO/PAS unity after the many failed unity dramas of the past 60 years is that it is following the Islamic divorce laws. You must marry someone else before you can remarry the same person again. PAS did a few during Dato Asri's leadership, then with Semangat 46, then with PKR/DAP during Ge 13, and now back again after GE14. History has records of all the horrible things they said about each other. The old lady waving her parang during the Mamali incident shown on TV is still fresh in my mind. I still remember the cartoons about PAS leaders with dangerous animal bodies ready for kill in all the major Malaysian newspapers before a GE of the past. In every such unity PAS has always been the losers. If it had continued unity with PKR and DAP, today many in PAS would be ministers deciding the fate of the nation. Let us see how long this marriage will last and who wins.

  • What still remains and not buried, can be forgotten just like that. Taking things lightly will backfire one day, especially so when you are dealing with hides with the tiger.
