TRAILING a series of hot button issues, the pension scheme has taken centre stage after the prime minister called for it to be reviewed due to its being increasingly difficult to sustain over time.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad rightly pointed out that the pension payments were increasing, almost hitting RM28 billion, or nearly 9% of the national budget of RM 314.5 billion. The payments will increase with a larger civil service and higher life expectancy.

  • While this is a good write up, what the article has not analysed is that Malaysia has. High ratio of civil servants per capita. Of course, we all know WHY that happened. And if this Pakatan govt also thinks like the BN govt, that the civil service is a ready outfit to absorb otherwise unemployable grads produced by our local establishments, then you are not going to see much of a change.

  • Well written on how to cost saving and the reducing of government's spending towards civil servants, privatisation and the implementation of hiring process through meritocracy. Knowing who no longer applies in interviews and only the best will stay.
