Boycott won’t work against Chinese community, says Anwar

BOYCOTTS will not affect the Chinese community due to their economic strength, said PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the calls to boycott non-Muslim products arose from fears of the Malays that they are being threatened economically by the other races.

“The Malays are in panic when they feel the Chinese are about to overtake them. Even the Indians too in a smaller measure.

“With this fear, they start thinking about this boycott… but the Chinese community’s economy is too strong to be affected by such boycotts,” he said after an event at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Bangi today.

Previously, Malay rights groups Gerakan Pembela Ummah (Ummah) dan Persatuan Pengguna Islam Malaysia (PPIM) launched campaign to only buy Musim products to assist Malay/bumiputera traders.

However, following objections raised by the non-Malays on the teaching of Jawi in vernacular schools, the campaign took a different turn to become a movement to boycott non-bumi products and services.

The cabinet has rejected the boycott call and urged Malaysians to buy Malaysian products. – September 5, 2019.

  • The problem will worsen if the Chinese reply in kind. That would be really messy. I remember in the seventies when the Malay CEO of a tobacco company made statements to the effect that they dont need Chinese business.
The repercussions were immediate and certain premium cigarettes were instantly unavailable almost everywhere. Even a belated apology was of little help. A call for Chinese boycott of Gardenia bread in favoiiof Massimo is another example. The Chinese rise up as one, the other races dont. The Malays should simply call off this poorly thought out move. Anwar is right. The Chinese are too strong and resilient.

  • I don't think saying such things helps to mend things. If anything, it only serves to stoke more discontent perhaps?

    • Totally agree. Anwar should stop pitting one race against another. In fact all these boycott talks should stop NOW! Let us all live in peace and work together as Malaysians to improve the country not destroy it.

  • Have a non Malay friend, he has a large factory in China, producing Baju kurung and tudung. His marketshare is large, made obscene amount of profit. He is a Chinese Malaysian. Another friend of Indian origin. Big businessman, operating nasi kandar outlets all over Malaysia, household brand. Not many know he isn't a Muslim nor a malay. Boycott? Won't hit the nons.

  • The nature's law "survival of the fittest" will still rule. People naturally will choose to buy what they need like breathing the air. They will still inhale without distinguishing whether this air is Muslim or that air is not Muslim. Only fools will pause to think about the air and then get suffocated.

  • Malaysian Chinese & Indians consider this their country and have contributed sincerely to its development. It is disheartening and troubling when this is questioned or denied. Instead of talking about chinese strength in the economy how about emphasising that nations only prosper when people pull together- the strengths of each race come together to increase the size of the pie. There are no winners and losers. Only losers if our politics continues to go down this very scary path.

  • NK is in a dire state to want US to lift all embargo so that they can trade freely with any country. Here we are seeing a group of people wanting to self impose embargo on themselves. Funny as it seems.

  • The type of education the Malays are getting from their choice of school is not helping them to advance their level of thinking. They are become the stooges for the power that be to be used and abused and they are rather mindless or clueless about the whole thing...
