POLICE have summoned five members of Save Malaysia, Stop Lynas (SMSL) to give their statements on Thursday over their organisation of an anti-Lynas protest over the weekend.
SMSL chairman Tan Bun Teet told The Malaysian Insight the five members, which includes himself, were notified that their interviews would take place at the Kuantan police headquarters.
SMSL held a rally on Sunday to protest the federal government’s decision to grant the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) a six-month licence extension. The activists say the Australian rare earth miner has not adequately addressed the matter of the management of its low-level radioactive waste.
Police said the rally organisers were called in because the event in Taman Gelora did not comply with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
District police chief Mohd Noor Yusof Ali said the Kuantan Municipal Council did not give approval for the protest to be held in Taman Gelora.
Prior to the protest Tan said SMSL had informed the municipal council of its intent to gather at the park, but had not received a response. He said the group would take the silence as consent. – August 20, 2019.
