AN anti-Lynas protest in Taman Gelora, Kuantan will proceed tomorrow as planned, said Save Malaysia, Stop Lynas (SMSL).
“We have already informed the Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) two weeks ago and since they have neither rejected nor accepted (the notice of a protest), we will take it that it’s accepted,” SMSL chairman Tan Bun Teet told The Malaysian Insight today.
Tan said Taman Gelora was a public place and the gathering should not pose any problems to the public.
“Moreover, we have held more than 10 protests there since 2011 and there have been no issues,” said the 71-year-old activist.
Kuantan police have said the protest organisers have failed to comply with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
Kuantan district police chief assistant commissioner Mohd Noor Yusof Ali said that although the organisers had informed the police, SMSL had not yet received MPK’s approval to hold a protest in Taman Gelora.
“The organisers have informed the police but they have yet to obtain consent from the owner or occupier of the venue of the assembly, and in this case, MPK manages Taman Gelora.
“I have yet to hear from the organisers and was informed that they have yet to receive approval from MPK,” Mohd Noor was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times.
SMSL is holding the gathering to protest Putrajaya’s decision to conditionally extend by six months the operating licence of the Lynas Advanced Material Plant (LAMP) in Gebeng Industrial Park.
SMSL said Lynas must stop operations because it has failed to keep its promise to properly manage the low level radioactive waste produced at the refinery/
The protest is scheduled to take place at 7am -10am in Taman Gelora Lama, Kuantan. – August 17, 2019.
