UMNO wants to, but cannot help party mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia as its bank accounts have been frozen by the Pakatan Harapan government, said Najib Razak.
The former Umno president, in a Facebook post last night, said RM116 million in the party’s funds have been seized and frozen by PH.
“After a year of investigating, the government still can’t prove that the funds in Umno’s accounts were the result of crimes.
“According to the law, PH should release the accounts and reinstate the funds if there are no criminal charges within a year.”
Najib, who is also former prime minister, added that PH knows the money was legitimately earned and should be returned.
“However, because of political repression, they issued a civil suit to continue the freeze on the funds, to incite Umno and myself.
“The move has also made Utusan the victim.”
Utusan Melayu Bhd sources told The Malaysian Insight that Utusan, which is the country’s oldest Bahasa Malaysia newspaper, and its sister tabloid, Kosmo, will cease publication tomorrow.
They said the decision to shut down the dailies will be conveyed to staff by executive chairman Abd Aziz Sheikh Fadzir today.
Yesterday, Utusan employees, who have not been paid their salaries since June, picketed outside the company’s office in Kuala Lumpur.
Najib said the best way to keep Utusan and Kosmo afloat is for people to buy the papers.
He said he was saddened to read news on Utusan potentially shutting down.
“Don’t expect PH to help Malaysia’s oldest newspaper. Don’t expect PH to save these Malay cultural treasures.
“Therefore, it is time for all people to come forward to help by buying a copy of Utusan or Kosmo.” – August 20, 2019.
