CONTROVERSIAL preacher Zakir Naik has been summoned to be at the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters on Monday for more questioning over provocative remarks he made at an event in Kelantan last weekend.

Federal CID director Huzir Mohamed said in a statement today that the Mumbai-born Zakir was questioned for more than four hours yesterday and that he would be grilled again on Monday..

He said investigators from the Classified Criminal Investigations Department recorded Zakir’s statement.

“He (Zakir) was accompanied by his lawyer Akberdin Abdul Kader. The procedure will continue on August 19 at 3pm as Zakir sought an adjournment (on Friday) to break fast,” said Huzir.

The top cop also confirmed that Malaysia permanent resident Zakir was questioned based on two police reports.

One report was filed on August 12 over Zakir’s allegedly anti-Indian Hindu comments at a Kelantan event, clips of which were widely shared on WhatsApp.

The other report was made on August 14 over Zakir’s allegedly anti-Chinese comments made at the same event.

Huzir said Zakir is under investigation for insulting with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, an offence punishable by up to two years in jail or a fine or both, under Section 504 of the Penal Code.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday said Zakir’s permanent resident status could be revoked if his actions were detrimental to the wellbeing of the country.

Malaysia has refused to accede to India’s request to extradite the preacher, who is wanted at home for money-laundering, hate speech and inciting terrorism. – August 17, 2019.
