NATIONAL Patriots Association (Patriot) wants a public apology from Utusan Malaysia for insinuating that the veterans group is dishonest and corrupt.

The online version of the Malay daily had alleged that Patriot had kept silent when armed forces personnel were accused of doing nothing except eating and sleeping” by tycoon Koon Yew Yin.

In a statement today, Patriot public communications director Capt Dr Wong Ang Peng (rtd) said Utusan did not check with the veterans if they had a statement on the matter

Wong said Patriot had immediately asked Defence Ministry officials to investigate Koon’s article as soon as it appeared.

He said Deputy Defence Minister Liew Chin Tong issued a statement on the evening of August 14, thus confirming what Koon had written in his blog.

“On August 15 at 9am Patriot released a statement criticising Koon for his ignorance on the roles of the armed forces.

“Our statement was carried in Free Malaysia Today, The Malaysian Insight, Malaysiakini, and other news media in the late morning and early afternoon, much earlier than the Utusan Online article that came out at 4.14pm,” he said.

Ang said Utusan’s negligence resulted in numerous disparaging comments from readers about Patriot president Brig-Gen Mohamed Arshad Raji personally and Patriot in general.

“These derogatory remarks are not just confined to Utusan readers, but has spread to social media where many also said that Patriots are stooges of DAP.

“So much hatred and repugnant postings has resulted from Utusan’s omission.” – August 17, 2019.

  • I think the reputations of Brig-Gen Mohamed Arshad Raji personally and Patriot in general suffered greatly. Brig-Gen et el should sue them for all it is worth.

  • Sue the pants off Utusan. The Patriots must do it. An apology, even if tendered, is not good enough. Utusan must be made to pay a high price for the fake news.

  • Utusan is due to die on Wednesday. Even in their dying moments they are still nasty. No need to sue the dead. Utusan have met their karma. That is the best compensation Patriot could ever hope for.
