ZAKIR Naik’s permanent resident status can be revoked if he does something that is detrimental to the nation’s well-being, said Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
For now, said the prime minister, Putrajaya will leave it to police to investigate the controversial preacher, who has had more than 100 reports lodged against him.
“We will need to take action to prevent him from making such speeches, which… pit the races against each other,” he said after visiting the AirAsia headquarters in Sepang today.
Yesterday, Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said police will call up Zakir for questioning, after Criminal Investigation Department director Huzir Mohamed announced that a probe has been launched into the Mumbai-born preacher, following 115 reports lodged.
Zakir has inflamed racial and religious sentiments with his remarks on Hindus and Chinese during his recent tour of PAS-led Kelantan.
Asked if Zakir should apologise for his statements, Dr Mahathir said he does not think an apology will appease the people.
“I don’t know about demanding a public apology. I don’t think it will assuage the anger of many people.
“We’ll leave it to police to investigate the seriousness of the statements that he has made.” – August 16, 2019.
