UMNO and PAS, despite their political cooperation, will find it difficult to wrest Johor, said Hasni Mohammad.
The state Umno liaison chief said the parties need “something more” to attract Malay support, and must recapture at least 10% of Malay voters in Johor to realise their goal of unseating Pakatan Harapan.
“Umno-PAS unity is not going to solve everything. We need more than that.
“We need the support of all races, we just can’t avoid it. Umno needs to understand what non-Malays think in order to win them over as well,” he said when officiating at the Sembrong division meeting today.
PH took over the state in the 14th general election last year, winning 39 of the 56 seats in the state assembly.
Umno and PAS are due to sign a charter on their cooperation at a mega event on September 14.
Hasni said in GE14, Umno won only 18 of Johor’s 38 Malay-majority seats. It lost in all nine Chinese-majority seats it contested, and won just one mixed seat.
Between PAS and Umno, the Malay-Muslim parties will win just nine more state seats in the next elections, he estimated.
“That comes up to just 27 seats. We won’t be able to form the state government. We need 29 seats.” – August 9, 2019.
