THE opposition lawmakers who met with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently wanted to know if the country is stable, according to Hishammuddin Hussein.
The Sembrong MP said there was nothing unusual about Tuesday’s meeting and noted there was nothing to prevent any opposition legislator from meeting the prime minister.
“There is no reason why the opposition cannot meet with the head of government,” he told reporters after opening the Sembrong Umno division Youth, Women and Puteri meetings today.
He moved to kill speculation among some Umno members about his presence at the meeting by declaring he had no ulterior motive other than attending it.
“Whatever meetings I attend are for the good of the country, the people and religion. That is my belief and people should not deny my desire to look ahead constructively.”
The former Umno vice-president said details of the meeting will be made public if there was a need for it.
“Avoid sensationalising the issue as it will only trigger speculation. Speculation will only lead to conspiracy theories.”
The opposition MPs met Dr Mahathir to convince him to serve out his full term.
The issue of whether the 94-year-old will step down mid-term resurfaced recently after PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang pledged his party’s allegiance, warning that “changing a prime minister is not like changing shoes”.
Hishamuddin did not say whether Mohamed Azmin Ali had attended the meeting or if he had the blessing of the Umno leadership to attend.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been silent on the meeting despite attempts to get his comments.
English-language daily The Star reported yesterday that a group of opposition lawmakers had met Dr Mahathir to pledge their support for him to serve out his term in office.
The group comprised representatives from Umno, PAS and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
Apart from Hishamuddin, among the opposition leaders who attended the meeting are PAS vice-president Samsuri Ahmad Mokhtar, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan and GPS chief whip Fadillah Yusof.
However, Dr Mahathir had repeatedly said he did not wish to serve a full term and had insisted that he will hand power over to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim at some point during his tenure. – August 2, 2019.

Dah la kalah election because you thought voters won't reject your UMNO, now you continue to play politics while the nation still burns from BN's era of excess.
