THE PAS president’s support for Dr Mahathir Mohamad to stay on as prime minister for a full term should be welcomed by all, said Mohamed Azmin Ali.
The economic affairs minister and PKR No. 2 said he shares Abdul Hadi Awang’s stand.
“This is so that we can realise the need to return the nation to its former glory,” he said in a statement today.
He added that bipartisan support for Dr Mahathir marks a new beginning for Malaysia, putting the people’s interests front and centre.
“This was evident in the recent constitutional amendment to lower the voting age. The support showed everyone’s confidence in Dr Mahathir’s leadership.”
Over the weekend, Hadi said PAS wants Dr Mahathir to remain as prime minister for a full term, saying the “dominance” of non-Muslim leaders in the ruling Pakatan Harapan necessitates the matter.
He said Dr Mahathir, who is also Bersatu chairman, has spoken up in defence of Islam.
Support for Dr Mahathir to complete his term as prime minister runs counter to an agreement between PH components for PKR president Anwar Ibrahim to take over soon.
While no timeline has been officially stated, the pact’s leaders have said Dr Mahathir has agreed to step down two years into the job.
In recent months, Azmin has been consistent in his support for Dr Mahathir to remain in the post, amid pressure on him from his own party.
The PKR deputy president and Anwar have been seen to be not getting along, following a gay sex video scandal implicating the former.
Azmin previously said the clips were the work of certain quarters within PKR seeking to end his political career. – July 29, 2019.
