LIKE the previous opposition, PAS and Umno’s sole objective now is to defeat Pakatan Harapan (PH), said Mohamad Hasan.
“We have agreed that will be our main objective,” the Umno deputy president told delegates in Lumut today.
He said that the pact will see the two parties work on strengthening Malay unity and avoiding three-cornered fights in the next elections.
“If not for the three-cornered fights, we may have not lost the last elections,” said the 63-year-old during the opening of the Umno Beruas division AGM.
He said Umno members should not concern themselves about seat allocations as their sole purpose should be defeating PH in the next elections.
“We will leave the smaller issues like seats to the two party’s presidents, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Abdul Hadi Awang. We as members should ‘wala’ (adhere loyally) to whatever they decide,” said Mohamad.
He told the delegates that the terms for the Umno-PAS partnership has been firmed up.
“The next step is to finalise a BN and PAS working framework.”
Barisan Nasional lost 21 seats to PH in the last general election as a result of three-cornered fights. Three of the seats – Parit Buntar, Tambun and Lumut – were in Perak.
But Mohamad said all is not lost despite the GE14 defeat.
“At the very least, it has forced us to work together with PAS. No longer will we attack them or them us.
“This is like the old days,” said Mohamad, referring to the 1970s when PAS was one of the component parties in BN.
Also at the opening were Umno state liaison chief and former Perak Mentri Besar Zambry Abdul Kadir, Beruas division chairman Azman Ahmad and MCA, MIC and PAS Beruas division leaders. – July 27, 2019.
