Dr MAHATHIR Mohamad should see out his term as prime minister, as any move to replace him in haste will have a negative impact on the country and the people, said Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
The Gua Musang MP said he did not think there will be any change of guard in the near future.
“I don’t think in the current situation in the country, the prime minister is likely to let go of his post to his successor. He has made many promises which have yet to be fulfilled,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama today.
The former finance minister and one-time nemesis to Dr Mahathir in Umno made the comments while opening the Gua Musang Umno delegates meeting today.
It is generally accepted that PKR president Anwar Ibrahim will replace Dr Mahathir as the next prime minister and in the run up to the last general election, the former deputy prime minister was touted as the country’s eight prime minister.
Since receiving a royal pardon, the two have been asked on their power transition plan.
Dr Mahathir had often said he would relinquish his position when the right time comes and hand the reins to Anwar.
PH chief secretary Saifuddin Abdullah said there is no time frame given.
Dr Mahathir had said he wanted to settle the country’s debt before handing it over to Anwar.
Anwar, on the other hand, said the issue of transition would only cause disharmony if it was being played up regularly.
On a separate note, Tengku Razaleigh told reporters that the cooperation between Umno and PAS was creating political history after decades of animosity between both parties. – July 20, 2019.
