DR Mahathir Mohamad today condemned the act of issuing bomb threats against religious programmes.

“That’s not the proper way. It is their (organisers’) right (to hold programmes) so long as they don’t spread their teachings to other Muslims,” the prime minister told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

His comments follow reports on the cancellation of the Amman Message seminar, originally scheduled for Saturday.

The organiser, International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies, scrapped the event after receiving a bomb threat on the “Gerakan Banteras Syiah” Facebook page by one Amirol Md Zain.

Police are investigating the case under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Section 507 of the Penal Code.

The Amman Message, aimed at promoting understanding between Sunni and Shia Muslims, was inked in the Jordanian capital by King Abdullah II in 2004.

The document recognises the validity of all eight Islamic schools of thought. – July 11, 2019.
