PUTRAJAYA will act on fishermen’s protest against the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project if there are grounds for their complaints, said the prime minister.
“We will study their grouses and take the appropriate action,” Dr Mahathir Mohamad told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
He was commenting on the rally outside Parliament participated by 200 fishermen from Penang and Perak, as well as environmental campaigners.
The group gathered at the National Monument as early as 8am before marching to the Parliament gates to hand over a memorandum to Dr Mahathir opposing PSR, which they said threatens their livelihood.
They said the project, to cover an area measuring 1,821ha, will affect some 10,000 people in the fishing industry.
PSR involves the development of three man-made islands, with parts of the islands to be put up for sale. The proceeds from these sales will be used to fund projects under the Penang Transport Master Plan, a RM49 billion endeavour aimed at resolving Penang island’s traffic woes. – July 11, 2019.
