UMNO and PAS will not win in the 15th general election if its political cooperation only raises issues of concern to Malay-Muslims without focusing on other races, said Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo.
The former Selangor menteri besar said focusing on winning Malay votes at the expense of other races was one of the reasons Barisan Nasional lost in Selangor for three consecutive elections.
“It is not that we should reject the unity of the ummah but we want to unite all people. Unity of the ummah is only for Malay-Muslim.
He said he had discussed the matter with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his deputy, Mohamad Hasan.
“I talked to Zahid and Mat Hasan, and stressed on the need for unity of all Malaysians, not just the ummah,” he said.
He also slammed the deeply entrenched belief of some quarters in Umno that the party could win without support from other races.
“Some say we can win without (the support of) any other race. I say no. If this were true, why was Umno defeated three times in Selangor?
“I used to say many times not to ignore other races but no one heard me. Eventually, Selangor was lost and Umno lost in the general election,” he said.
Khir, 52, was Selangor menteri besar from 2000 to 2008, and state opposition leader from 2008 to 2010.
After Barisan Nasional’s major losses in GE14, Umno and PAS established formal tie-up in a bid to wrest back power in the next general election. – July 7, 2019.
