THE Shah Alam Coroner’s Court will call an engineering expert to assist in the inquest into the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.

Coroner Rofiah Mohamad said today that the court had evaluated two candidates and decided on UiTM mechanical engineering senior lecturer Dr Amir Radzi Ab. Ghani to testify.

Conducting officer Faten Hadni Khairuddin said Dr Amir would be called for his opinion on the conflicting findings of the forensic pathologists.

Forensic expert from Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) Dr Ahmad Hafizam Hasmi had given his conclusions regarding how Adib was injured but a second forensic expert, consultant pathologist Dr Shahrom Abd Wahid had differed.

“When Dr Shahrom Abd Wahid came to testify, one of his opinions was that the impact from the edge of the Emergency Rescue Vehicle Services door was not sufficient to cause injuries to Adib, as opposed to the opinions from the HKL forensics expert.

“Dr Shahrom had used the Newton formula to show the force is minimal. Both forensics expert (from HKL) said they are not experts in physics and that is the reason Dr Amir has been called,” she said at the Shah Alam High Court today.

HKL forensic specialist Dr Ahmad  had previously told the inquest that the mass of the vehicle could not be disregarded, Faten said.

“He gave a different calculation. So both forensic experts admitted that they have little knowledge in this field.

“As a result the court feels the need for an expert to clarify on their calculations to see whether there is sufficient force or not.”

Dr Amir is expected to take the stand on July 16 and 17.

Coroner Rofiah said she reserved the right to also call an independent forensic pathologist to weigh in on the contradictory findings of Dr Shahrom and Dr Hafizan.

“After listening to the testimony of the expert in physics then the court will decide if a third forensic expert is needed,” she said.

Adib was Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue EMRS personnel who sustained injuries while on duty during   a riot at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ25, Subang Jaya on November 27 last year. He died in the National Heart Institute on December 17

The inquest hearing will resume July 16. – July 5, 2019.

  • The directional momentum of both the firetruck that hit the EMRS van as well as that of the EMRS van itself need to be taken into account at the point the door hit Adib, as clearly force was transferred from the firetruck itself as it collided into the EMRS van. This is basic physics.
