PAS lawmakers will declare their assets to Parliament, said Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, a day after saying doing so goes against Islamic teachings.

The PAS deputy president said the party backs any effort to combat graft, and given this, members are willing to disclose how much they are worth.

“We have a responsibility not just to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, but to Allah. We must make sure our earnings are halal and we are accountable for them in the hereafter.

“For PAS we don’t have a problem (with declaring assets) as this has been approved… We will follow the decision and declare our assets,” he said at the Parliament lobby today.

He did not want to be drawn on his comments yesterday, which created a stir online, with many social media users demanding to know how anti-graft efforts can be considered un-Islamic.

Today, the Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism hit out at Tuan Ibrahim and like-minded parliamentarians, saying they should not use religion to protect themselves.

After a motion to compel all MPs to declare their assets was tabled yesterday, Tuan Ibrahim, who is also Kubang Kerian lawmaker, told reporters that making public one’s assets is not only dangerous, but contravenes Islamic teachings.

“If God gives us wealth, you do not reveal it to the public, because it will create attention and envy.

“It will be a real security concern for those who are declaring, and also their family members. This concern should be considered.”

Today, he said PAS hopes the motion will cover a bigger scope and evolve into legislation.

“We feel that it is only a motion now. Why not make it an act?

“If the motion is not strong, why not turn it into an act that comes under MACC? This way, action can be taken against those who refuse to comply.” – July 2, 2019.

  • No substance. Talk nonsense. Pity those who are following him with blind loyalty or do they have no substance too.
