Embarrassing to use religion as shield against declaring assets, says anti-graft watchdog

THE refusal by lawmakers to declare their assets on religious grounds is embarrassing and goes against the values of democracy, said an anti-graft watchdog.

The Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) today hits out at PAS’ Kubang Kerian lawmaker Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and other parliamentarians who supported him, saying they should not use religion to protect themselves.

The watchdog group’s executive director Cynthia Gabriel said in a statement that the attitude displayed by the opposition MPs are embarrassing and against the values of democracy, adding that the people have the right to know.

“In a democratic country, the people have the right to know and be informed of the assets of MPs to ensure they serve with full accountability, transparency and integrity.

“Integrity is taken into account by all religions to execute their duties to the people. Opposition MPs have nothing to worry if their lifestyles are in line with religious teachings.”

Tuan Ibrahim, who is also PAS deputy president, yesterday said the party is against members declaring their assets because it contravenes Islamic teachings.

“If God gives us wealth, you do not reveal it to the public, because it will create attention and envy,” he said in the Parliament lobby yesterday.

In welcoming the adoption of the asset declaration motion in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, Cynthia said the move will set in motion efforts to introduce laws where lawmakers with unexplained wealth can be made to explain.

C4 also welcomed de facto law minister Liew Vui Keong’s statement that an act is in the works, as it will be an effective way to ensure full disclosure.

At this juncture, only Section 36 of the MACC Act that looks into unexplained wealth. However, this is only limited to cases investigated under the MACC Act.

“Good governance can only be achieved if there is a complete law on asset declaration.

“The act should be tabled transparently, taking into account the views of the public as they serve as a check balance to the government in ensuring that there is no abuse of power and corruption,” Cynthia said. – July 2, 2019.
