UMNO is looking at other candidates who may be better qualified to be Selangor liaison chairman, other that the four names proposed by Selangor Umno, said deputy president Mohamad Hasan.
Mohamad said the selection process had to be undertaken properly to ensure it would not adversely affect Umno.
“Let us discuss, do a proper consensus. Although there are already four names nominated, we must not limit ourselves to only those four.
“We are not accepting other names but are searching for a candidate who might be more qualified than the four individuals,” he said at a press conference after opening the Sepang Umno division meeting today.
He said, however, that Umno’s traditional practice has been to pick a state chairman from among the state’s divisional chiefs.
Last May, Umno Selangor had submitted four names to the leadership for the post of Selangor liaison chairman to replace Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Among those who offered themseleves were state deputy liaison chairman Mat Nadzari Ahmad Dahlan, Semenyih Umno chief Johan Abdul Aziz, Gombak Umno chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin and Sepang Umno chief Noorazli Said.
Ismail, who is Umno vice-president, was appointed to lead Selangor Umno last July to lead the restructuring of the party’s state administration.
Party polls last June saw the election of 11 greenhorns among 22 divisional chiefs in total.
The Malaysian Insight previously reported that former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo had also offered himself for the position. – June 30, 2019.
