‘Fatwa’ to overthrow Pakatan not wrong, says Umno

UMNO has defended PAS’ announcement that overthrowing the Pakatan Harapan government is “wajib” (obligatory), saying its members needed such guidance.

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said PAS’ “fatwa” was not wrong as it was merely a suggestion and not compulsory.

“PAS announced the fatwa to its members because they require such guidance from their leaders,” he said at a press conference after opening the Sepang Umno division meeting today.

He said PAS members differed from Umno members in that they were more dependent on and heed the words of their leadership to the letter.

He added that a fatwa serves only as a guide and was not mandatory, as perceived by many.

“This fatwa should not be misunderstood. This fatwa is a guide and is not a law; it is an indication,” he said.

At its muktamar in Kuantan, Pahang, recently, PAS dewan ulama chief Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh had said that making efforts to bring down the Pakatan Harapan government was incumbent on all the party’s members.

Zawawi added PAS could not depend entirely on its political unity and cooperation with Umno and others alone to succeed in this.

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu later slammed PAS’ issuing of the “fatwa”, calling it a ploy to use religion for political purposes.

On whether the “fatwa” applied to Umno members, Mohamad said the party did not have to follow PAS’ ways.

“It’s not to say that it applies to Umno; we just work together. We do not have to follow everything that PAS does, not to that extent. Our partnership is aimed at working together on strategy.”

At least 10 civil society bodies have since lodged police reports over Zawawi’s remarks, citing it as inflammatory and aimed at stirring religious sentiments. – June 30, 2019.

  • Why didnt they issue fatwas from GE1 to GE14. Maybe God didnt think their fatwa was genuine so God didnt support it. Cant they issue a fatwa to increase state revenue. Cant they issue a fatwa to reduce incest and rape. Or is the fatwa only effective for non tangible things.

  • Fatwa is just some words spoken by some EVIL human being. Bcoz it is Always Wrong to Dictate any Human Being's LIFE. Malaysia already hv a Judiciary System Why we need fatwas which carry No Weight and is Emotionally given by human.

  • What a farce!!. Just to issue a such a fatwa for political purpose place the jurisprudence of Islamic Religion to be mocked. It is sad and pathetic that it has come to such stage. If the learned Islamic Scholars and Muftis are silent on this, it shall be viewed by many as condoning the comical and irrelevant childish play. The act itself in being political in nature has dirtied the sanctity in Islam uplifting of spiritual well being. Do not blame others be it the believers or nons, that such fatwa games played are the cause for many to laugh and ridicule the act relating to the practises of the religion itself. It is very blatant in the Muslim world that thousnds of fatwas are issue blindly to serve one own selfish purposes. They may have forgotten that gone are the days where gullibles and simple pedestrians will look up at the Caliph , Mullahs and Kings in issuing the edict of fatwas in the guise of spiritual enforcement but selfishly to consolidate their power base and put fear to dissent. In that retrospect since it is now an open season..... well it should not stop PH too in issuing fatwas to counter and curtail UmnoPAS for their wayward demeanour. Happy Fatwing !!!!!
