YTL Communications dropped as ISP for schools

EFFECTIVE July 1, Telekom Malaysia Bhd, Celcom Axiata Bhd and Maxis Broadband Bhd will be the internet service providers for schools via the 1BestariNet programme, the Education Ministry announced today.

The contract will be reviewed in six months, on January 1, 2020, the ministry said in a statement today. YTL Communications Sdn Bhd’s contract to provide the service expires on June 30.

It said the government had reviewed the controversial RM4 billion programme to spearhead 4G broadband connectivity and a virtual learning environment to some 10,214 classrooms and 366 teaching facilities nationwide.

The ministry said some schools in the Sarawak and Sabah interiors will experience some interruption in internet service until the end of July.

1BestariNet was initiated in 2011 to provide high-speed 4G internet access to schools.

In 2014, the Auditor-General’s Report highlighted that YTL Communications, owned by tycoon Francis Yeoh, failed to fulfil contract obligations in a subcontract worth RM663 million.

The report had revealed that only less than 5% of students nationwide used the facility and YTL Communications. – June 27, 2019.

  • YTL Communications, in particular YES is an insular organisation who is either not very good at listening to Customer feedback or could not care less. The head has rotted a long time ago.
