PERLIS Mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin today commended Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his decision not to extradite controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik to his native India.
In a Facebook post today, Asri lauded Dr Mahathir’s stand which he said is “highly respected”.
The Perlis mufti was reacting to the prime minister’s statement today that Malaysia has the right not to extradite Zakir if he is not going to be accorded justice at home.
Dr Mahathir had likened Zakir’s circumstances to those of convicted Malaysian murderer Sirul Azhar Umar in Australia, which refuses to deport Sirul on grounds that he will be hanged if he is sent home.
Sirul was sentenced to death in 2015 for the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu.
“It showed his (Dr Mahathir’s) refusal to bow to the tyranny and oppression of India,” Asri said, declaring that Muslims and “loyal” Malaysians would back Dr Mahathir on this.
He said Malaysian Indians who wished to see the preacher extradited were showing misplaced loyalty to India.
“What is surprising is that there are a number of people who have obtained citizenship in this country who still show loyalty to their country of origin.
“On the matter of DZN (acronym for Zakir Naik), it is plain to see that they are expressing loyalty not to Malaysia but to India instead.” – June 11, 2019.
