NIK Nazmi Nik Ahmad wants the public to sign a petition calling for the resignation of Latheefa Koya as the new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief, despite Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad saying his decision on the appointment is final.

The Setiawangsa MP is the third PKR member after Wangsa Maju MP Dr Tan Yee Kew and PKR Youth vice-president Syed Badli Syah Syed Osman urging Latheefa to step down.

“Pakatan Harapan made a commitment that the appointment of the anti-graft chief be brought to the parliamentary select committee.

“Let us all sign the petition (calling for Latheefa’s resignation). This issue is bigger than Latheefa Koya, this is about the reform that we pledged to bring forward,” said the former PKR Youth chief on Twitter.

As at 9am, 5,400 have signed the online petition demanding Latheefa’s resignation while 10,000 signed a rival petition urging the human rights lawyer to stay on as the new MACC chief.

On Friday, Tan, the former PKR party treasurer, said the process by which Latheefa was appointed is flawed and goes against PH’s campaign to reduce the prime minister’s power to appoint key people.

“The process is not right. As a responsible politician, who has been working very hard for the past years for a new Malaysia, I think she should resign to defend the new Malaysia concept,” said Tan, who has placed a link to the petition on her Facebook page.

She also denied that her stance is motivated by factionalism within PKR.

“This has nothing to do with her. It’s more to do with upholding the principle which we have been fighting together,” she said on Facebook.

Latheefa was named as the new MACC chief commissioner on Tuesday to replace Mohd Shukri Abdull who stepped down ahead of the end of his contract on May 17, 2020.

The former Lawyers for Liberty executive director is on a two-year contract with the commission, effective June 1, 2019.

Her shock appointment provoked a mixed response from civil society, the opposition, and PH, whose members are split in their opinions.

During the open house at the prime minister’s official residence in Putrajaya on Wednesday, Dr Mahathir told reporters that said it was his decision to make Latheefa the MACC chief.

“She is very straightforward. She says what the truth is. She doesn’t mince words,” he said. “I appointed her based on her strong character. She is not afraid to make her stand.” – June 9, 2019.

  • Those asking L to resign is making an ass out of themselves. What Tun M did was within the law. PH had only proposed to have selection by PSC in December 2018 but this was never passed into law. Hence for PSC to select or even to override the PM's right is illegal under the Malaysian Constitution. Get your facts right instead of being an empty vessel!

  • Many of these same do-gooders screamed like crazy that Dr M went against their 'Manifesto' when he appointed himself Education Minister. Then we got saddled with Maszlee! Are they happy now that they got 3rd rate crap? Don't make the same mistake twice. Just shut up and let Tun govern and Latheefa rein in the kings (and queens) of corruption.

  • These three PKR member will no more see their role in GE15. They will be ousted and stay home to ponder on the next petition for whom

  • I'd have thought better of Nik Nazmi if he didn't make his partisanship so blatant and counterproductive. PKR leaders should stop using the Latheefa appointment to divert from their own deep rifts which make life difficult for everyone in and out of the party and PH.
