MY DECISION to appoint Latheefa Koya as the new chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is final, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said today.

He said the appointment had been made in exactly the same manner as for other senior officers.

“There is no problem, I appoint a lot of people,” he said at the Aidilfitri open house hosted by his son and Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir today.

“Latheefa’s appointment is just one of them, that’s all… it’s final.

“Obviously I am not going to retract it, then they will say I am making a U-turn,” he said, responding to media reports that PKR president Anwar Ibrahim wanted the PM to clarify Latheefa’s appointment as the new MACC chief.

“He has the right to ask, I have the right to reply,” he said.

Latheefa Koya was named as the new MACC chief commissioner on Tuesday to replace Mohd Shukri Abdull, who stepped down ahead of the end of his contract on May 17, 2020.

The former Lawyers for Liberty executive director is on a two-year contract with the commission effective June 1, 2019.

Her shock appointment provoked a mixed response from civil society groups, the opposition and Pakatan Harapan, whose members are split in their opinions.  – Bernama, June 8, 2019.

  • Right answer!! Nothing more to offer. Like it or not it shall proceed !!!. Just tell them all "eat your heart out". All the past appoinment was not any concern why bring out this particular case. Let LK bring more corrupted leaders into slammer where the squealing out of evidences the less the lanun is abled to vindicate himself from all the crimes. This shuld have been the way to run the country immediately after the victory and only after that when it is stable let those idealist run riot with their democratic principle. Right many hinderances from the Umno warlords and economic woes are prioriy and head strong actions are needed.

  • I agree with the candidate choice but I don't agree with the manner the candidate was being appointed

  • No U-turn, of course. And the criticisms and opposition, mostly misguided or partisan, should spur Latheefa to rise to the occasion. I look forward to a splendid and noble performance by her.
