No money, no need to hold Raya open houses, IGP tells his men

DISTRICT police chiefs who instructed their men to collect donations for Raya will be transferred out, said Abdul Hamid Bador.

The inspector-general of police, who earlier today issued an internal memo to all officers warning them to stop the “disgusting” habit, said he has received complaints on the practice from lower-ranked cops.

He said he was incensed to find out that several district police chiefs had instructed their men to collect donations from individuals and companies to organise Raya open houses.

“If you can’t afford to organise an event, then do not organise it at all. What is the point of collecting funds just to hold an event?

“That is not acceptable,” he said after launching the Ops Selamat 15 road-safety campaign in conjuction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri at the Gombak toll plaza this afternoon.

Hamid said a probe into the matter is ongoing, and district police chiefs found guilty will be transferred out of their current districts.

He confirmed that one such officer from Kuala Lumpur is being investigated.

“Yes, it happened. I will take action. It is a disgrace to the force. The money comes from the public, (and it is) more shameful when it comes from illegal means.

“I know there are many who deem it a success (organising Raya open houses), but what is there to be proud of? Is the public going to feel sad if we don’t organise these open houses? No!”

He was asked to comment on the internal memo, in which he told officers to stop collecting funds for the upcoming celebrations.

He reminded them that he had previously given a similar warning to end such practices, but found they are still being done.

“It is an internal memo. How it was leaked to the media, I am not sure. I’ve received complaints from lower-ranked officers that they were forced to collect Raya funds.

“My warning to them is to stop doing this. This issue has been raised before. If they want to organise an event, use the money from their own club or collect among themselves.

“Do not seek funds from companies or individuals. I have made it clear that this has to stop.”

He said it is even more appalling that some donors were told that the funds would be given to “asnaf”, or “zakat” recipients.

Hamid, who was appointed as the nation’s top cop last month, has taken a tough stance when it comes to police’s involvement in illegal activities.

Soon after assuming the post, he pledged to rid the force of corrupt practices, singling out officers who dealt with syndicates and warning them to cut all ties with the underworld. – June 3, 2019.

  • This IGP is so far the best and he is the one who could restore the PDRM image. Mr. IGP you have the rakyat support. Set up a trustable complaint bureau where public whistle blowers without fear can lodge on police corruptions with evidences provided. This will help to rid off the bad hats.

  • Excellent way of stopping the nonsense in almost all departments. IGP is showing the best example for other civil servants to follow. Ridiculous of having buka puasa feast almost every other day during the fasting month and one month after Raya. Imagine 2 months of all these forms of parties at the expense of job tasks not performing while holding Buka Puasa feast and Raya feast. We never saw this type of wasting time in those days. IGP must be commended to take the lead. Well done IGP!
