NEWLY minted Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador has issued a stern warning to the force today to immediately sever ties with the underworld and stay away from corrupt practices.
He said the police force under his watch will not compromise with corruption or crimes committed by its own members.
He was responding to a question about the involvement of police officers in corruption.
“I will do my best to eradicate corruption in the force and will clean up the force,” said Hamid.
“The police are involved in illegal gaming and vice syndicate operations after they are compromised by the syndicates.
“I have issued a warning, an ultimatum to all these officers to cut off connections with these syndicates,” Hamid said after the launch of Ops Selamat for Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Bangsar, reported Malaysiakini.
He added although there are recent cases involving his men in criminal activities, many officers are still honest and responsible.
He, however, urged Bukit Aman’s top brass to lead by example.
“If there are 500 dirty cops, there are 125,000 more good cops. I believe my men are good.
“We are basically good people and we have to set a good example from the top. I will set a good example from the top.”
Hamid also called for the end of the culture of getting sponsorship for police activities.
“No more culture of forcing the lower ranked officers to get sponsors. These practices have become our culture and this is what I want to eradicate.”
He added that he will reward officers who turned down bribe offers, including giving field promotions to officers in extraordinary cases.
“In extraordinary cases, I can promote them in what we call field promotion and I can give it instantly.”
Last week, several police officers were detained after being caught red-handed for robbing RM204,000 from a money changer in Dang Wangi.
All men, including three Bank Negara officers, have been remanded.
Hamid told The Malaysian Insight that stern action will be taken against them. – May 24, 2019.
