PAKATAN Harapan, especially DAP, objected to a debate between him and Lim Kit Siang out of fear that the latter would lose, said Najib Razak today.
“There were attempts to cancel the debate. They worried that Kit Siang would lose the debate.
“There are fears that I would use facts that would be difficult for Kit Siang to counter, and that many of PH’s propaganda would prove to be lies and slander,” Najib wrote on his Facebook page this evening after the DAP veteran announced he would not debate the former prime minister.
Najib said PH should have faith in the Iskandar Puteri MP, who has been the boss of DAP for more than 50 years.
He also said PH should realise that nobody would be forced to watch the debate, and that taxpayers’ money would not be used for it.
“In the spirit of democracy and transparency, the debate should proceed with the topic suggested by DAP, which I have already consented (to),” he said.
Lim had, in an earlier statement, said he was turning down the debate for fear that the event would spiral into a racial conflict.
The DAP supremo had said there was a great likelihood that a debate on “how Malaysia became a global kleptocracy and how we can become a leading nation of integrity” could morph into a Malay vs Chinese clash.
He had said the fight against corruption, abuse of power and crimes like money-laundering was not a racial or religious issue, but one concerning good values and governance.
Lim had said that although he initially agreed to the debate – appointing his aides to liaise with Najib’s officers to finalise details of the debate for after Hari Raya – he was advised by many Malaysians against it.
He said a Malay academician warned him that the debate was a trap that would lead to Najib winning favour irrespective of any salient points Lim were to bring up.
Najib also shared the link to Lim’s statement on his Facebook page.
“There it is. Kit Siang’s long statement on pulling out from the debate.
“The one who agreed to debate was Kit Siang. The one who proposed the title was also him. The one pulling out is also him,” the former Umno and Barisan Nasional chief said.
Earlier this week, Najib had invited Lim to debate him only any subject of his choice, including the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal.
He said a debate with Lim – whom he described as “obsessed” with him – would allow both of them to make their stand on various issues and let the people judge for themselves. – May 23, 2019.
