Matriculation meant to be backdoor to university for Malays, says PM

THE matriculation programme was meant to be a backdoor to help more Malay students get into university, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“We decided to have matriculation because we found that Malays do not have a higher certificate and they could enter universities. So, we provided a backdoor for that.

“It was entirely meant to be a backdoor (entry) for Malays but now other people do much better but they cannot get into matriculation.

“It is simply because they did not do much better that we had to create matriculation for the Malays. Now, we have agreed that we will also give to the non-Malays,” he said in a group interview ahead of Pakatan Harapan’s first year anniversary.

He said the rationale of increasing the number of Malays in universities via matriculation no longer stands as Chinese and Indian students are also going through the “backdoor”.

The PM said certain quarters are now making the programme an issue to stir up the people.

On April 29, Education Minister Maszlee Malik said that additional seats will be given to non-Bumiputera students.

More than 4,000 places were given to non-Bumiputeras for the first time.

Dr Mahathir said PH needs the support of all races to remain in power.

“If you ask the Malays and Muslims they will tell you that this government doesn’t pay attention to Islam and it is not upholding Islam. They have demonstrations with 5,000-10,000 people taking to the streets.”

“We have to be conscious of that.

“If we are not attentive to that we will lose support of the Malays. If we lose the support of the Chinese we will also lose. Even the Indians play a big role in ensuring that PH will (stay) So, we have to be very careful.” – May 6, 2019.

  • This rationalization is absurd !!! Totally absurd.!!! Who was the smart aleck that comes out with a back door policy for poor performers entry into matriculations. Ridiculous !!!!.. If one does not make the cut to go for tertiary education but was allow to,due to the lowering of entrance level, it will again be the same application of principle in back door policy to pass all less than mediocre to graduate. What do have in Malaysia then ??? . A useless pool of misfits and half baked educated graduates who can't even string up a sentences in proper English. Do you expect to be competitive?? No wonder with such ill policy we have fake graduates , fake certification of degree holders in MBs to Ministers . A crying shame indeed. We have to accept the very fact that if one is stupid in studying no matter how much of steam is loaded to boost him/her up, nothing goes into the head. Simply if one cannot study please do not force it down their throat. Have more programns in Living Skill for those who may not be academic inclined but provide training and skill set in stree smart economic activities. They can become successful and properous too. Many well know millionaires are not graduates but they are good entrpreneurs as long as they are enterprising in attitude. Not all the Alis ,Ahmads and Karims can be a graduate or Phd holders. Lets get the cream of the crop irrespective of race or creed to be supported in the education rather than a racist policy in the guise to help poor Malays. It does not work in such manner if the country needs to move forward. We are now hard pressed for time as all our neighbouring countries are now a decade ahead of us. Just look at those countries which were below us like Vietnam , Thailand and Cambodia. Their emphasis on the education are part of their programn in modernisation and a leap by many folds to be at least on certain level to "play"with big superpower on communication , medical field and technology guided economic activities. The directions we are moving and at later stage it might just wreck the country as only less educated fools remain to helm the country which will end up going no where. Due to this silliness we are having severe brain drain. Stop it Mahatir !!!!. You are flogging the dead horse theory. This is wrong. Malaysia is Malysian . Malaysian is Malay, Chinese, Indian kadazan , Iban , Dayak and whoever that was born in this country. Everyone has the right to persue education and if it deems fit those who are strong academically should be supported all the way to complete their schooling up to tertiary level and even to post graduates. In this way we have a real home grown talent pool .. If this stupidity of back door entry is perpetuated the Malays are not uplifting themselve to be competent and do not have the pride to say that they are good graduates. Truthfully down the road with such degradation there might not be even a country to run as it is in the process of self destructions due to selfish racist act.

    • Then scrap the matriculations and everyone goes thru' STPM to ensure good intakes to Tertiary education. Everyone will be happy as no longer the racist 90% quota in place. It will be a level pkaying to hring out the best in Malaysian. This I doubt too as again the mark grading will be manipulated to meet the requirement of a community. We come back to square one. . The mind set has got to change

  • Did our Minister of Education go through matriculation or STPM before entering university?

  • By using the word backdoor, PM has been hard on Malays and has the intention to shame the Malays. Hopefully that will spook them to work harder.

  • we should have more faith in our Malay students.. If they can excel in SPM, the capable ones will be able to to do well in higher education without these ridiculous back doors.
The non deserving ones should not even be allowed in. They should instead be encouraged to do vocational studies or other fields that can benefit themselves and the country.

Back door students can destroy our country.
