PUTRAJAYA will look into what the public wants before deciding whether to set up an independent police complaints and misconduct commission (IPCMC), said Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The prime minister said this was because the government was aware there were differing views on the issue.
“There are people who are for it and there are people against it.
“We will study public opinion before making a decision,” he said after an event in Putrajaya today.
Earlier today, the outgoing Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said senior police officers have rejected the suggestion that an independent body takes charge of police discipline.
Fuzi said the idea was rejected by serving and retired police officers at a recent meeting.
The force has registered its objection through a memo to the Prime Minister’s Office.
Fuzi said those at the meeting had also decided that a committee will have to meet the prime minister to discuss the matter.
In May 2018, Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the Pakatan Harapan government was in the process of establishing the commission in fulfilment of PH’s election promise.
In March, Fuzi said the police had set up a task force to collect feedback on IPCMC. – May 2, 2019.
