What Muslim bullying, Patriot asks Perlis mufti

Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainal Abidin accuses Pakatan Harapan of being bullies when it comes to treating Muslims, a claim which has baffled a veterans’ group. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, May 1, 2019.

A VETERANS’ group is baffled over Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin’s claims that Muslims are being bullied under Pakatan Harapan, urging the prime minister to listen to the reality on the ground.

The mufti’s call depends on whose narrative he is listening to, said National Patriots Association president Brig-Gen (rtd) Mohamad Arshad Raji in a statement today.

“It all depends on which side of the news the learned mufti chooses to lend his ears to. Surely, he cannot be ignorant of the work by spin masters concocting lies on race, religion and royalties issues, and the bullets of last resort, as the opposition parties have nothing on national issues to fault the PH government with.

“Peddlers of fake news are aplenty in the arena of psychological warfare of racial politicking. By listening to uncorroborated grievances of the people then his concerns are misplaced,” he said in response to Asri’s complaint about Putrajaya’s treatment of Muslims.

Asri in a Facebook post complained that Muslims were being bullied under PH after the arrest of Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu over remarks allegedly insulting Hinduism.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad immediately ticked off the Perlis mufti who accused Putrajaya of silence over remarks allegedly “offensive to Muslims”.

Dr Mahathir labelled the mufti “deaf” while defending Putrajaya’s Islamic credentials.

“If he could hear, we do many things for Muslims and Islam, but he does not hear it,” he was quoted as saying.

Arshad said the arrest of independent preacher Zamri for allegedly insulting Hinduism, which Asri seems to have protested against, is an isolated issue.

“Let the investigation runs its course. Patriot would like to reiterate that no one, no preacher, whatever the religious denomination, should make comparison on one’s religion with the others. Doing so would invite animosity that will divide further our society that is at the lowest ebb now,” he said.

The reality on the ground is that Asri and his cohorts, who are prejudiced, sow hatred and spin lies to create uneasiness and distrust, should be stopped, Arshad said.

“For the future of our country to be prosperous, peaceful, and to safeguard our future generations, they must start thinking as Malaysians,” he said.

Arshad said Dr Mahathir and his cabinet’s main concern is the economy.

Putting right the economy, which has been hit with successive scandals by the previous administration, will go a long way to help the people, the majority of which comprise the Malay poor.

“The government allocated RM 6.3 billion to rescue Felda and another RM 17.8 billion on a restructuring plan for Tabung Haji. These bailouts of RM24 billion to solve problems created by the past administration are a huge amount and the non-Malays are not protesting,” he said.

Arshad said the Barisan Nasional-era infrastructure contracts given to Malays or Umno cronies are allowed by the Finance Ministry to continue after renegotiation, saving a meagre sum of RM 806 million.

“If these actions of the government are not considered kind towards the people, particularly the Muslims, then what is?”

Asri has lost credibility for not speaking up strongly enough against Najib Razak and the top officials of the previous administration when the mega-scandals disgraced our nation, he added.

“He has little credibility to speak on the concerns of the people now. A mufti as head of the Islamic religion in the state must also propagate unity among all races from different religions. Every religion advocates understanding, tolerance and respect each other’s belief.” – May 1, 2019.

  • Well said, Asri. This Mufti was once seen as a progressive Muslim but since inspired and influenced by Zakir Naik, he has been transformed into the dark side of Islam.

  • When national unity is being threatened by statements that are clearly false and which brings no benefit to the people except to incite and inflame the majority against the minority, the perpetrators must be brought to book and be held accountable for their negative impact. More so if he is a State mufti who should be preaching harmony, peace and good will. The nation expects such personalities to eschew the propagation of ill will and falsehood. Diversity and harmony are the hard earned results of our multi-racial community and all efforts should be made to preserve it even if it means certain freedoms of expression are curtailed in order to achieve national unity. It is hoped that all Malaysians including the Perlis mufti and the PDRM remember this.
