THERE is a money trail linking the purchase of a US$23 million (RM97 million) pink diamond necklace with funds from 1Malaysia Development Bhd, the police said today.

The money trail showed that the jewellery, linked to Rosmah Mansor, was bought from a New York-based jeweller, said Bukit Aman CID Anti-Money Laundering division chief Khalil Azlan Chik.

However, the 22-carat diamond was not found during raids conducted by the police at premises linked to former prime minister Najib Razak in the days after the 14th general election, he said.

“Although the diamond was not found during raids, it is clear that the transaction existed from the evidence collected,” he said.

Khalil was responding to Rosmah’s denials that she was the recipient of the pink diamond.

Rosmah said she was a victim of slander over the pink diamond, accusing critics of targeting her because Najib was the prime minister then.

She also urged Pakatan Harapan to apologise to the people over the matter.

The remark follows Deputy Finance Minister Amiruddin Hamzah’s disclosure in the Dewan Rakyat earlier this week that the wife of a VVIP did not purchase a pink diamond.

Amiruddin told the house that the pink diamond linked to a high-profile case was not purchased by the wife of a VVIP and that it was a sales agent who had brought the piece along with other jewellery into the country for the woman’s viewing.

The agent declared the jewellery to Customs.

“No, purchase occurred because the agent had taken the jewellery out,” he said.

On Thursday, Rosmah claimed trial to a new corruption charge in relation to a solar project for rural schools in Sarawak.

She is presently facing 20 counts of corruption. – April 13, 2019.

As for the pink diamond, it's most likely being kept in the safe deposit box in a swiss bank.

  • If I were Amiruddin I would have responded the matter though its of a national interest however its still under investigation therefore any statement made would jeopardies the on going investigation. Naive is not the word for you Amiruddin. I reserved the correct word for you later.
