UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged Umno members not to pit him against his deputy, Mohamad Hasan, who is currently assuming the former’s duties.
Zahid, who is on leave as party chief after being charged with corruption, said the party had stabilised following the turmoil that came after its May 9 general election defeat.
“The trouble-makers are everywhere. Some are in the party while others are from outside. Be wary of these people,” he warned while campaigning in the Rantau by-election last night.
This was the Umno president’s first ceramah since handing over duties to Mohamad or Mat Hasan as he is affectionately known last December.
Zahid said Mohamad had done a commendable job of running Umno since he went on leave.
He singled out the party’s success cementing ties with PAS, which Zahid started before taking leave.
“I am not jealous of his success and I am sure he is also harbours no ill will towards me. But he must be wary of trouble-makers who may try to get us to fight,” he said.
Zahid faces 45 charges of criminal breach of trust, money-laundering and abuse of power involving more than RM114 million.
He is out on bail. Following the court action, there were calls for Zahid to step down until the charges have been dealt with. – April 11, 2019.
