MOKHZANI Mahathir’s appointment as Motorsports Association of Malaysia president is not about making a comeback in sports, said his father and Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The criticism of the appointment, Dr Mahathir said is made because of politics.

“People always accuse us of doing all kinds of things because of politics, not because of practicality,” he was quoted as saying in Malaysiakini.

He added it is not Mokhzani’s intention to make a deliberate comeback as he previously had to spend “so much of his money”.

Mokhzani had been chairman of the Sepang International Circuit.

The appointment was made amid Putrajaya’s move to make the association the motorsports authority in the country, replacing Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) that held the responsibility.

The Malaysian Insight reported last week that the Youth and Sports Ministry will no longer recognise AAM as the motorsports authority in Malaysia. – March 24, 2019
