A TOTAL of RM174,000 will be donated to Malaysian victims and the two mosques that were attacked in the Christchurch shooting on Friday, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa.

Mujahid, who is heading to Christchurch today to represent the Malaysian government, said the donation was collected within a short span of time. The collection is still ongoing.

Among those who contributed the donation are Kumpulan Karangkraf Sdn Bhd, Yayasan Takwa, Bank Islam, Tabung Haji and the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (Jawi).

“The total donation is about RM174,000, which we will divide and give to the victims’ family and the two mosques involved,” he told a press conference at Kuala Lumpur International Airport today before his departure.

He said his visit involves meeting the victims’ families as well as managing any matters involving the Malaysian government. He said he will also visit other families that were victims of the shooting.

“This includes meeting with New Zealand leaders to express our condolences over the dark incident that took place and also to thank them for the handling of the victims,” he added.

It was confirmed earlier today that 17-year-old Malaysian, Mohd Haziq Mohd Tarmizi was also killed in the shooting.

Mujahid is scheduled to meet Haziq’s family in Christchurch. The minister in charge of religious affairs is also due to conduct funeral prayers for the teenager, said the Prime Minister’s Office in a statement today.

“Following this very sad news, the minister has requested that all mosques in Malaysia hold funeral prayers for Allahyarham Haziq after Friday prayers tomorrow,” it said.

The terror assault on the Al-Noor and Linwood Mosques left 50 people dead and scores injured.

Three Malaysians are among those hurt. They are Rahimi Ahmad, Mohd Tarmizi Shuib and Mohd Nazril Hisham Omar.

Tarmizi, a 46-year-old flight simulator operator, has undergone operations to remove bullet fragments. He is recovering in the hospital, as are Rahimi and Nazril. – March 21, 2019.
